How I help
Leadership teams need different types of support at different times.
Sometimes the first task is to understand what is happening and why.
Sometimes the priority is to deliberately develop how the team works together.
And sometimes the leadership teams need skilled support with a particular challenge as it unfolds.
My work falls into three areas.
01/ Understand
See what's happening
When a leadership team knows something isn't working as well as it could - but they're not sure why - the first step is to understand what's happening in order to know where to spend time and energy.
I provide an independent, evidence-informed view of how the team is working together, what might be getting in the way, and where attention is likely to make the greatest difference.
Leadership team effectiveness review
Get an independent view of how effectively your leadership team is working together
The Review looks beyond individual capability to understand how the team is functioning as a collective.
We'll help you to identify what's working well, what the challenges or risk to effective collective leadership might be, and what you could focus on as a team to make the biggest difference.
TYPICALLY INCLUDES
-
Leadership Team Assessment
-
Confidential individual interviews
-
Meeting observation
-
Analysis against Collective Leadership Framework
-
Feedback report
-
CEO/Chair feedback discussion
-
Priorities and recommendations
YOU LEAVE WITH
A clear, independent view of the team's strengths, challenges and priorities, with recommendations for what to do next to improve collective leadership.
Best when: Teams that want to understand what's happening, or surface issues that haven't been collectively acknowledged, before deciding what needs to change.
Leadership team effectiveness sprint
Understand what's happening - and start making changes.
The Sprint includes and builds on the Review by bringing the leadership team together to make sense of the findings, agree where change is needed, and begin to work differently.
Over 6–8 weeks, the team focuses on one or two priorities, tries practical changes in its day-to-day work, and comes back together to review what's working and what needs to change.
TYPICALLY INCLUDES
The Leadership Team Effectiveness Review, plus:
-
Facilitated feedback and sense-making of the Review with the leadership team
-
Focused working session on one or two priority areas
-
Time to put changes into practice
-
Follow-up session to review, learn and adjust
-
Agreed next steps for sustainability
YOU LEAVE WITH
A shared understanding of what's happening, practical experience of working differently, and clearer priorities for what happens next.
Best when: You want to make a focused improvement to how the team works together, or make a start without committing to a longer development programme.
02/ Develop
Strengthen collective capability
Leadership teams rarely become more effective simply through spending more time together.
Development focuses on strengthening the capabilities the team needs to make sense of complexity, exercise collective judgement, reach and own decisions, coordinate action and learn together.
Leadership team development programme
Strengthen your leadership team's capacity to lead the organisation together.
REAL WORK | DEVELOPMENT | APPLICATION | LEARNING
A tailored 6–12 month programme that develops how your leadership team thinks, judges, decides and acts collectively.
Development is built around the team's real organisational work.
I combine observation, team coaching, targeted workshops, psychological insight and practical experimentation to strengthen the capabilities your team needs most.
MAY INCLUDE:
-
Leadership Team Effectiveness Review
-
Team observation
-
Team coaching
-
Targeted development workshops
-
Individual executive coaching
-
Application to real organisational challenges
-
Ongoing review and evaluation
THE AIM
To strengthen the leadership team's collective capability so that it can think, judge, decide, act and learn more effectively together.
Best when: You want to make a sustained investment in how your leadership team works together, rather than address a single issue or development need.
Leadership team workshops
Focused development around a specific aspect of how your leadership team works together.
Tailored workshops give leadership teams dedicated time to explore and strengthen an area of collective leadership that matters in their context.
Sessions combine relevant evidence and psychological insight with practical tools, structured discussion and application to the team's own work.
MIGHT FOCUS ON:
-
Collective sense-making and judgement
-
Making better decisions together
-
Constructive challenge and disagreement
-
Collective commitment and accountability
-
Turning decisions into coordinated action
-
Enterprise leadership and stewardship
FORMAT
Half day, full day or series of workshops
Best when: You want to strengthen a particular aspect of collective leadership, address a specific development need, or introduce the team to new ways of working together.
03/ Support
Support for leaders and teams navigating the real work of leading.
Not every leadership challenge needs a development programme. Sometimes a leader or team needs skilled, independent support with a difficult issue, an important piece of work or a period of change.
Executive & Leadership Team coaching
Independent, psychologically informed coaching for senior leaders and leadership teams.
Coaching provides space to think more clearly about the challenges of leading, whether you are an individual leader navigating complexity, change, difficult relationships or significant decisions, or a leadership team working through issues that need collective attention.
My approach combines psychological insight with a practical understanding of senior leadership and organisational dynamics, while keeping the focus on the real issues you are facing.
COACHING CAN SUPPORT:
-
Individual leadership challenges
-
Complex decisions and change
-
Relationships and difficult conversations
-
Leadership transitions
-
Team dynamics and ways of working
-
Challenges that need to be worked through collectively
THE AIM
Greater clarity, perspective and choice in how you respond to the leadership challenges you or your team are facing.
Best when: You or your leadership team want dedicated space to think, reflect and work through live challenges with an independent coach.
Strategic facilitation
Help your leadership team get an important piece of collective work done.
When a leadership team needs to work through a complex issue, make an important decision or create something together, I design and guide the process so that team members can focus on the content rather than managing the conversation.
This might be a strategy session, working through competing priorities, reaching a difficult decision or creating shared direction around a significant organisational challenge.
THE AIM
To help the team do better collective work on an issue that matters.
Best when: You know what the team needs to work on, but want independent expertise to design and facilitate how you work through it together.
Ongoing advisory support (retainer)
Access to independent expertise and perspective as you navigate the ongoing work of leading.
Some leadership challenges don't fit neatly into a programme or a single intervention. I work with CEOs and leadership teams on an ongoing basis, providing an external perspective, constructive challenge and practical input as issues, decisions and organisational challenges arise.
Advisory support allows me to be more explicit about what I'm seeing, what I think may be getting in the way, and what I would recommend considering.
THE AIM
To provide continuity of support and trusted external perspective as you navigate complex or evolving leadership challenges.
Best when: You want ongoing access to an experienced external adviser rather than support with one defined issue or piece of work.
Deciding between coaching, facilitation and ongoing advisory support?
Coaching changes the quality of your thinking, awareness and capacity to respond
Facilitation changes the quality of the process through which a team does collective work
Advisory adds external expertise and judgement to your own
